Background: Internal migrants are exposed to higher risks of depressive symptoms due to migration-related stress. It has been recognized that perceived neighborhood social cohesion has direct and indirect associations with depressive symptoms. However, the pathway from perceived social cohesion to internal migrants' depressive symptoms was less discussed. Objectives: To assess mental health disparities among internal migrants. To investigate the association between social cohesion and depressive symptoms among urban-to-urban and rural-to-urban migrants and to examine the mediating role of social adaptation. Methods: Data from the "2017 Urbanization and New Migrant Survey" was used, including 2,584 internal migrants age 18-65 from 10 cities in China. Social cohesion was measured by a six-item modified Community-level Cohesion Scale. Depressive symptoms was measured using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, and social adaptation was assessed by a single-item question of migrants' adaptation to local life. Multivariate linear regression models were used to examine the association between social cohesion and depressive symptoms. Baron and Kenny's mediation tests were conducted to examine the mediating role of social adaptation on the association. All analyses were adjusted using sampling weights to account for this survey's sampling design. Results: Rural-to-urban migrants were found to have more clinically significant depressive symptoms, lower perceived social cohesion, and fair or low social adaptation than urban-to-urban migrants (all p < 0.001). Being rural-to-urban migrants as compared with urban-to-urban migrants [Odds Ratio (OR) = 1.46, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.456, 1.461, p < 0.001], had lower perceived social cohesion (OR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.458, 1.463, p < 0.001), and poorer social adaptation (OR = 1.94, 95% CI = 1.932, 1.941, p < 0.001), are associated with higher odds of having clinically significant depressive symptoms. Social adaptation partially mediated the association between social cohesion and depressive symptoms by explaining 15.39% of its effect for urban-to-urban migrants and 18.97% for rural-to-urban migrants. Conclusions: Findings from this study reveal mental health inequalities among internal migrants and demonstrate the importance of social adaption on the association between social cohesion and depressive symptoms. Social strategies and public policies are needed to build a more cohesive community that serves both local residents and internal migrants, especially rural-to-urban migrants.

Mercury (Hg) can be converted to neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) by certain microbes typically in anaerobic environments, threatening human health due to its bioaccumulation in food webs. However, it is unclear whether and how Hg can be methylated in legacy aerobic uplands with increasing water. Here, we conducted a series of incubation experiments to investigate the effects of increased water content on MeHg production in two typical upland soils (i.e., long-term and short-term use). Results showed that marked MeHg production occurred in water-saturated upland soils, which was strongly correlated with the proportions of significantly stimulated Hg methylating taxon (i.e., Geobacter). Elevated temperature further enhanced MeHg production by blooming proportions of typical Hg methylators (i.e., Clostridium, Acetonema, and Geobacter). Water saturation could also enhance microbial Hg methylation by facilitating microbial syntrophy between non-Hg methylators and Hg methylators. Taken together, the present work suggests that uplands could turn into a potential MeHg reservoir in response to water inputs resulting from rainfall or anthropogenic irrigation.

Our previous clinical study achieved complete remission (CR) rates of >90% following chimeric antigen receptor T cells targeting CD19 (CART19) treatment of refractory/relapsed B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (r/r B-ALL); however, the influence of the leukemia burden in peripheral blood (PB) blasts remains unclear. Here, we retrospectively analyzed 143 patients treated with CART19 (including 36 patients with PB blasts) to evaluate the effect of peripheral leukemia burden at the time of apheresis. One hundred seventeen patients with high disease burdens achieved 91.5% CR or incomplete count recovery CR and 86.3% minimal residual disease-negative CR, and 26 patients with low disease burdens obtained 96.2% MRD- CR. Collectively, 9 of 36 (25%) patients with PB blasts and 2 of 107 (1.87%) patients without PB blasts did not respond to CART19 therapy. The leukemia burden in PB negatively influenced ex vivo cell characteristics, including the transduction efficiency of CD3+ T cells and their fold expansion, and in vivo cell dynamics, including peak CART19 proportion and absolute count, fold expansion, and persistence duration. Further studies showed that these patients had higher programmed death-1 expression in CART19 products. Our data imply that PB blasts negatively affected CART19 production and the clinical efficacy of CART19 therapy in patients with r/r B-ALL.

Objective: China's dental care system is bifurcated between urban and rural areas. However, very few studies have examined the dental services utilization inequities in China's megacities, particularly in these urban and rural areas. This study aims to examine the urban-rural disparities in dental services utilization among adults living in China's megacities based on the Andersen dental services utilization model. Methods: This study used data from 4,049 residents aged 18-65 who participated in the "2019 New Era and Living Conditions in Megacities Survey." Multivariate logistic regressions were employed to examine the associations between place of residence and dental services utilization for individuals from ten megacities in China. Predisposing variables (age, gender, marital status, living arrangement, and education), enabling variables (socioeconomic status, occupational status, income, insurance coverage, health attitude, and health behavior), and need variables (self-rated health, oral health status, gum bleeding) were controlled for. Results: The mean age of the 4,049 adults was 45.2 (standard deviation = 13.0), and 30.4% (n = 1,232) had no dental visits at all. Adults who resided in urban areas were more likely to use dental services [odds ratio (OR) = 1.57, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.30 to 1.91] than those residing in rural areas after controlling for key covariates. Factors associated with higher odds of visiting dentists include having a higher income (OR = 1.44, P < 0.001), higher education level (OR = 1.53, P = 0.042), being covered by insurance for urban residents/employees (OR = 1.49, P = 0.031), having a positive attitude toward healthy diets (OR = 1.43, P < 0.001), attending regular physical examination (OR = 1.66, P < 0.001), having more tooth loss (OR = 1.05, P < 0.001), and having frequent gum bleeding (OR = 2.29, P < 0.001). Conclusion: The findings confirm that place of residence is associated with dental services utilization while adjusting for key covariates. Despite rapid economic development in China, many adults had never visited dentists at all. More efforts should be taken to encourage widespread dental care, such as providing more dental coverage and better access to dental care services.

The aims of the study were to present the prevalence of dental service utilization among adults (age between 18 and 65) in Chinese megacities and to examine the associations of health insurance and city of residence with dental visits. This study was a cross-sectional analysis of the 2019 New Era and Living Conditions in Megacities Survey data with a sample of 4835 participants aged 18-65 from 10 different megacities in China. The data including gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of each megacity obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics of China as a city-level characteristic. After adjusting sampling weights, approximately 24.28% of the participants had at least one dental visit per year. Findings from multilevel mixed-effects linear models showed that participants residing in megacities with higher GDP per capita (ß = 0.07, p < 0.001) who had Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance (ß = 0.25, p < 0.001) or Urban Resident Basic Medical Insurance (ß = 0.19, p < 0.01) had more frequent dental visits after adjusting demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, health status, health behavior and attitude, and oral health indicators. Margins post-estimation model results demonstrated disparities in the predicted probability of having never visited a dentist by types of health insurance and city of residence. In conclusion, the prevalence of dental visits in China was found to be low. This study highlights socioeconomic inequalities in dental service utilization. There is a great need to develop more dental care programs and services and expand health insurance to cover dental care in China.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxin, mainly derived from microbial mercury methylation in natural aquatic environments, and poses threats to human health. Polar regions and paddy soils are potential hotspots of mercury methylation and represent environmental settings that are susceptible to natural and anthropogenic perturbations. The effects of changing environmental conditions on the methylating microorganisms and mercury speciation due to global climate change and farming practices aimed for sustainable agriculture were discussed for polar regions and paddy soils, respectively. To better understand and predict microbial mercury methylation in the changing environment, we synthesized current understanding of how to effectively identify active mercury methylators and assess the bioavailability of different mercury species for methylation. The application of biomarkers based on the hgcAB genes have demonstrated the occurrence of potential mercury methylators, such as sulfate-reducing bacteria, iron-reducing bacteria, methanogen and syntrophs, in a diverse variety of microbial habitats. Advanced techniques, such as enriched stable isotope tracers, whole-cell biosensor and diffusive gradient thin film (DGT) have shown great promises in quantitatively assessing mercury availability to microbial methylators. Improved understanding of the complex structure of microbial communities consisting mercury methylators and non-methylators, chemical speciation of inorganic mercury under geochemically relevant conditions, and the pathway of cellular mercury uptake will undoubtedly facilitate accurate assessment and prediction of in situ microbial mercury methylation.

Rice ingestion has been recognized as an important route of dietary exposure to neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) that is commonly synthesized in rice paddy soils. Although Hg methylators are known to regulate soil MeHg formation, the effect of non-Hg methylating communities on MeHg production remains unclear. Here, we collected 141 paddy soil samples from main rice-producing areas across China to identify associations between bacterial community composition (including both Hg and putative non-Hg methylators) and MeHg production. Results showed that the MeHg content in the paddy soils varied from 0.11 to 8.36 ng g-1 at a national spatial scale, which could be due to the shifts of soil microbial community composition across different areas. Our structure equation modeling suggested a strong link between bacterial community composition and MeHg content and %MeHg. More importantly, random forest analyses suggested a more significant role of putative non-Hg methylators than Hg methylators in predicting variations of soil MeHg content. The relative abundance of putative non-Hg methylators such as unclassified Xanthomonadales and Chitinophagaceae were strongly correlated with soil MeHg contents. Further, microbial network analysis revealed strong co-occurrence patterns between the putative non-Hg and Hg methylators. These findings highlight an overlooked role of non-Hg methylating communities in predicting MeHg production in paddy soils.

Despite worldwide promising clinical outcome of CD19 CAR-T therapy, relapse after this therapy is associated with poor prognosis and has become an urgent problem to be solved. We conducted a CD22 CAR T-cell therapy in 34 relapsed or refractory (r/r) B-ALL pediatric and adult patients who failed from previous CD19 CAR T-cell therapy. Complete remission (CR) or CR with incomplete count recovery (CRi) was achieved in 24 of 30 patients (80%) that could be evaluated on day 30 after infusion, which accounted for 70.5% of all 34 enrolled patients. Most patients only experienced mild cytokine-release syndrome and neurotoxicity. Seven CR patients received no further treatment, and 3 of them remained in remission at 6, 6.6, and 14 months after infusion. Eleven CR patients were promptly bridged to transplantation, and 8 of them remained in remission at 4.6 to 13.3 months after transplantation, resulted in 1-year leukemia-free survival rate of 71.6% (95% CI, 44.2-99.0). CD22 antigen loss or mutation was not observed to be associated with relapsed patients. Our study demonstrated that our CD22 CAR T-cells was highly effective in inducing remission in r/r B-ALL patients, and also provided a precious window for subsequent transplantation to achieve durable remission.

CTN-1 is one of the rabies vaccine strains for human use in China, but there has been no report on the full-length gene sequence of CTN-1. In this study, the full-length gene of CTN-1 was amplified by RT-PCR, each PCR product was cloned into T vector and then sequenced, assemblied and compared with other vaccine strains as well as the wild Chinese rabies isolates. The phylogenetic tree of G gene was constructed and the genetic homology was analyzed. The results revealed that CTN-1 was 11 925nt (GenBank accession number: FJ959397)in length and belonged to the genotype I. The full-length nucleotide homologies among CTN-1 and other rabies virus strains were between 81.5%-93.4%, of which the lowest 81.5% was between CTN-1 strain and bat isolate SHBRV, and the highest 93.4% was between CTN-1 and Chinese isolate HN10. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the majority of Chinese isolates could be grouped into the same clade with the CTN-1 strain, but aG and some vaccine strains from abroad such as Flury, PM, PV, ERA, RC-HL and a few Chinese strains were grouped in another clade. Comparsion of the G protein genes also showed that the homologies among CTN-1 and most of the Chinese isolates were higher than that of the other vaccine strains to those Chinese strains. Therefore, it suggests that the CTN-1 strain is more suitable and rational to be used for the production of rabies inactivated vaccine in China than the others.
